SPEAKING OF SIN
Sunday mornings, 9:30-10:20, beginning February 21

Lent has traditionally been a time of repentance, a time when we examine ourselves, turn away from our sin, and seek Christ’s grace to live anew. But in our time, it has become hard to speak or think about sin, particularly in the mainline churches. What is it? Is it personal, collective, or both? Do we sin against one another, against God, against ourselves? If we admit there is sin, do we need to start judging one another? Do the ideas of sin and redemption contribute anything constructive to our understanding of who we are as human beings? Our Sunday morning Lenten offering will be a book study on Barbara Brown Taylor’s book, Speaking of Sin, in which one of our outstanding preachers tries to explore sin in new and revealing ways. You can order the book yourself; we will also have a number available for purchase at the church on February 14.

BUILDING AN ETHICAL ECONOMY
Wednesday evenings, 7-9, February 24–March 10

You are cordially invited to come join us for a soup supper and lively discussion of webcasts from the 2010 Trinity Institute, which will bring together leading theologians and economists to discuss the relationship between economics and Christian faith and life. Webcasts will include presentations by Rowan Williams (Archbishop of Canterbury), Kathryn Tanner (Professor of Theology at the University of Theology Divinity School), and Partha Dasgupta (Professor of Economics at St. John’s College, Cambridge University). The discussions will help participants formulate their own understandings of what wealth is, what we owe to future generations and to others in our society, and the complex relationship between Christianity and capitalism.

THE INTERIOR CASTLE: A LENTEN RETREAT
Leaders: The Reverend Deborah Meister, Rector, Christ Church, New Brunswick; the Reverend Gregory Bezilla, Chaplain, the Episcopal Campus Ministry at Rutgers

Come spend some time apart this Lent to deepen your faith, examine your life, and strengthen your connections with other Christians. We will explore the spiritual teachings of St. Theresa of Avila as we seek to understand our own places of connection with God, and how to deepen our responsiveness to Christ’s call.

WHEN: The retreat will be offered twice, both times at Christ Church, and will include lunch.

Saturday, February 20, from 10 a.m.—4 p.m. For Young Adults (aged 18-35) from around the Diocese, sponsored by the Right Onward Vision Committee. No cost. Please register with Sarah Paige: spaige@newjersey.anglican.org.

Saturday, March 13, from 10 a.m.–4 p.m. For parishioners of Christ Church and their friends. Cost: $10 for lunch, payable with your registration. (If you have special dietary needs, please tell us when you register, or bring your own lunch. Register with Julia Utz at admin@christchurchnewbrunswick.org by March 8.

If you are a young adult at Christ Church, you may register for either!
